One hopes for something unique, but at this point, I'm focusing my anticipation squarely on the singleplayer meat of the package.īioShock 2 hits the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on November 3. The team deathmatch mode-cleverly tied into the story by way of the Rapture civil war-may produce some interesting strategic play with the combination of plasmids, but at the end of the day, the success or failure of Digital's multiplayer is riding on that last mode. Fortunately, the official forums answer our questions and it’s pretty easy to have an organized article. And now that we’ve managed to find out how to fix all the BioShock 2 crashes and freezes, it’s time to enjoy the game and find out everything about the game’s multiplayer mode. Turrets are around to hack, and a power-up that spawns randomly throughout levels will turn one player into the Big Daddy for a time. One of the biggest new features in BioShock 2 was the introduction of multiplayer. Plasmids can be combined as in the singleplayer combat, and also used on the environment to sabotage unwitting deathmatchers. Players meandered about the levels, blasting away with plasmids and pistols, and at the end there was a scoreboard, and none of this is exciting to anyone who has played any other multiplayer game ever made in the world. Maybe it was the lacking skill on display in the demo, but I couldn't imagine a more dull application of the BioShock license in a multiplayer setting. On Steam if you buy the remastered version you also get the original though. The live demonstration of the free-for-all mode included six people slogging around in a BioShock area and randomly killing each other. It seems you can play multiplayer in the original Bioshock 2 but not the remastered version. Players can pre-set three weapon and ability loadouts, and switch between them while inside the modes.īut that wrapper is eventually torn away, and the gum inside is unsurprisingly stale. As you level up in the multiplayer-accomplished by earning ADAM via kills and other tasks -Sinclair will dole out the rewards and add them to your cache. Inside the well-modeled apartment, audio logs from plasmid development company Sinclair Solutions introduce new weapons and abilities. It's an optional element-players can skip to the action if they wish-but certainly more interesting than the gameplay itself. A bathysphere attached to the pad serves as the gateway to actual multiplayer matches. Users play as a character inside Rapture, with a 3D apartment serving as a pre-match hub. Its not perfect (yet) and its not likely to knock Modern Warfare 2 or Halo 3 off the charts, but theres enough here to make me want to come back for more come February 9th. The whole multiplayer mode has been placed in a fairly attractive wrapper. I spent some quality time with BioShock 2s multiplayer offerings earlier this week, finding it to be much deeper and more enjoyable than I originally expected. It's not that Digital Extremes isn't bringing anything new to the table. A lot is riding on that mystery mode, because as it stands, BioShock fans likely won't find the deathmatch to be any more than a one-round curiosity. So it is not a condemnation to say that, while 2K Marin's BioShock 2 shows great promise, Digital Extremes' BioShock 2 multiplayer component is looking like a lackluster experience.įor starters, the modes on tap only extend to free-for-all, team deathmatch, and an unannounced thing. The game's due out for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this autumn.Nobody buys baseball cards for the gum, and nobody's going to buy BioShock 2 for the multiplayer. "With Digital Extremes delivering a multiplayer experience for BioShock 2 that features all of the things that make BioShock unique, we’re holding ourselves to a high standard so that we can deliver the depth and variety that fans of the BioShock universe demand."Ĭheck out our recent, massive BioShock 2 preview to learn more about the single-player game, or check out our exclusive video interview with Jordan Thomas, also featuring gameplay footage. "The fans asked for a multiplayer experience and we answered," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. There's not much detail on the experience system yet, but 2K says has said it will feed into weapon, plasmid and tonic unlocks, and that you'll ultimately be able to kit out your player with any of hundreds of combinations. Players will learn more about the fall of Rapture and get to see it before the fall, with areas in and around Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites (presumably among others) reworked for FPS multiplayer. Promising a "rich prequel experience", it's an experience-driven battle between plasmid test subjects working for Sinclair Solutions. 2K has revealed that Digital Extremes is developing the multiplayer component of BioShock 2, and it's set before the fall of Rapture.
